The Salvation Army Angel Tree program, which began in 1991, is entering its 23rd year of making the holidays brighter for thousands of children in the Kansas City area.
This year, Angel Trees are located at Oak Park Mall, Zona Rosa Shopping Center, Independence Center, Metro North Mall and participating Walmart stores. Every Angel Tree features dozens of angel tags, each one representing a local child in need and their gift wishes. Shoppers or employees pick a tag and buy the gifts listed and return the gifts to the tree to be distributed to the children.
Salvation Army volunteers staff the trees at the malls during the duration of the program and the organization also arranges for the pickup and distribution of the toys before Christmas Day. Families receiving Angel Tree gifts also are provided with gift wrap and many also receive a box of food, including ham and potatoes, for their Christmas dinner.
Last year, The Salvation Army provided toys for nearly 16,000 children in need in the Kansas City metropolitan area through Angel Tree and Adopt-a-Family. For many of these children, these are the only gifts they receive on Christmas morning.
