KC Pain Center Uses a Proactive Approach to Battle the Unprecedented Opioid Epidemic
It seems as though you can’t turn on your television or pick up a newspaper without having your attention drawn to what is being referred to as an unprecedented opioid epidemic, which our nation is in the midst of.
To put it into better perspective, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report that more people died from drug overdoses in 2014 than in any year on record, and the majority of drug overdose deaths involved prescription pain medication. Additionally, in 2014, more than 240 million prescriptions were written for prescription opioids, which is more than enough to give every American adult their own bottle of pills. Raising further alarm, 4 out of 5 new heroin users started out by misusing prescription opioids. Statistics such as these are truly frightening, for all parties involved: patients, family members of patients and healthcare providers. The focus now is what to do to combat this epidemic?
Prevention, treatment, research, and effective responses to rapidly reverse opioid overdoses are critical to fighting the epidemic. Last year, the CDC published a set of guidelines as a way to battle the prevalent rise in opioid misuse and to assist healthcare providers in guiding their prescribing practices when it comes to opioids.
Patient Safety is Key
