Raising Awareness of Furniture Tip Overs and Preventing Other Injuries in the Home
He was supposed to be napping. Despite having an audio monitor on, two-year-old Charlie Horn’s nanny heard nothing. When she went to check on Charlie and his triplet sister and brother during naptime in their Kansas City home, she found him under his dresser. A 30-inch dresser had tipped over and fell on him; it didn’t make a sound – or much of a sound – because obviously there was something there to break the fall…Charlie’s small body. He was later declared dead of asphyxiation. It was in 2007 that Charlie’s House was formed in his memory to prevent injuries to children in and around the home.
Now meet 5 year old Nicklas Redlin, another KC boy. Last year, Nicklas was injured at his preschool when a 100 pound podium fell on his face. It is every parent’s nightmare as Lisa, his mom, watched the accident. “He had a mild traumatic brain injury which included a skull fracture, 8-10 facial fractures, a black eye, stitches under his eye and 2 broken bones in his left ear which has resulted in permanent hearing loss,” explained Lisa. “I question every day why I stayed around longer that day after school. Why it happened to him.” The podium is bolted now.
Join us on Sunday, September 11th, as Charlie’s House hosts the 4th Annual Home Run for Safety 5k, 3k and .4k Kids Fun Run at Shawnee Mission Park in Shawnee, Kansas – the largest annual gathering of Charlie’s House supporters to help support education of child safety, with over $50,000 raised in the first three years of the run. This fun filled family event will include the race, safety demonstrations with distribution of safety items, a kid’s zone, free bike helmets and, weather permitting, the Children’s Mercy Hospital helicopter will land for tours.
