Our goal is to give these courageous individuals the skills and equipment they need to overcome obstacles and boundaries for a higher quality of life.

A Focus on Independence
The amputee rehabilitation program focuses on the unique needs of each individual by proving the following program objectives:
Instruction in skin care
Pre-prosthetic instruction
Prosthetic gait training
Prosthetic limb maintenance

Targeted Treatment Plans
Upon entering the program, patients are evaluated by our team of rehabilitation professionals and individualized treatment plans are established, tailored to their specific needs.

Our team members that may participate in a patient’s daily therapy sessions include:
Case Manager – coordinate needs from admission to discharge
Dietitians – provide nutritional evaluation and support
Occupational Therapists – improve daily living skills
Physical Therapists – work to improve strength, endurance and mobility
Physician – for medical supervision and disease management
Rehabilitation Nurses – offer specialized, knowledgeable care
Wound Specialists – evaluate needs and risk factors, treat pressure areas, and develop wound care plan
Prosthetists – measures, designs, fabricates, fits and services prostheses
Each patient’s treatment plan is designed to accomplish their therapeutic goals through a sequence of measureable, achievable steps.

Therapeutic Goals Include:
Improving general and specific muscle strength
Educating patients and their families on skin care and prosthesis care
Shaping residual limb for prosthetic fit
Teaching independence in ambulation with and without prosthesis
Increasing independence in daily living skills
Developing coping skills for patient and family as they adjust to new challenges
Facilitating community re-entry
Return to work and job modification assistance

The amputee support group meets the second Thursday of every month from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm at MidAmerica Rehabilitation Hospital.

Who We Are
MidAmerica Rehabilitation Hospital is a 98 bed rehabilitation hospital that offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services. We provide a higher level of rehabilitative care to patients that have suffered amputation, stroke and other neurologic disorders, brain and spinal cord injury, orthopedic, cardiac and pulmonary conditions.
