Disease-Specific Care Certification
As a leader in brain injury rehabilitation, MidAmerica Rehabilitation Hospital will join the Brain Injury Association of America and its partners this month in recognizing National Brain Injury Awareness Month. Throughout March, the hospital is taking a closer look at brain injury rehabilitation and the healing power it can offer to patients with head injuries.
Recovering From a Brain Injury
Brain injuries are never expected. The most common causes of brain injury are vehicle crashes, falls, sports injuries and violence. Aside from trauma, brain injury can also result from disease, such as brain tumor, result of a stroke or other complex illness.
Medical care is the first step in treatment and includes treatments to control swelling, protect surrounding tissue and promote the brain’s healing. In the next steps of recovery, rehabilitation plays an important role. Brain injury rehabilitation requires an intricate and coordinated multidisciplinary approach to help patients regain the highest possible level of independence. A comprehensive rehabilitation program can improve many brain injury conditions, in some cases within a few days to a few months, in other cases therapy and recovery may continue for years. Rehabilitation for brain injury may be provided in any or all of the following settings:
Inpatient rehabilitation may include physical, cognitive and psychosocial therapy and care provided by a physician-led multidisciplinary team. Treatment aims toward regaining function, behavioral management and community re-entry.
Individualized, highly specific treatment continues the patient’s progress toward maximum independence.
Therapy and nursing care are conveniently provided in the home to achieve the patient’s goals.
Brain Injury Support Group meets first Saturday of every month from 9:30 am-10:30 am at MidAmerica Rehabilitation Hospital in the employee dining room.
