R.A. Bloch Foundation’s 2012 Cancer Survivorship Award Honors Linette Atwood

Founder and Publisher of Patient Resource Cancer Guide Dedicates Her Life to Educating and Empowering Patients

Well-known local cancer advocate Linette Atwood, founder of Patient Resource Publishing, was recently honored by the Bloch Cancer Foundation for her work in this area. As publisher of the Patient Resource Cancer Guide, she has dedicated her life to educating and empowering patients.

Linette Atwood has never sought the spotlight. But after years of tireless dedication on the front lines of cancer patient advocacy and education, the spotlight has found her. Atwood recently was honored as the recipient of the Richard A. Bloch Foundation’s 2012 Cancer Survivorship Award.

Making a Meaningful, Positive Impact
“Linette personifies the reason Richard Bloch created this award,” said Vangie Rich, executive director for the Bloch Cancer Foundation. “She has made a meaningful, positive impact in the lives of cancer patients, caregivers and survivors across the nation because of the Patient Resource Cancer Guide.”

Atwood herself is a 10-year cancer survivor, though she has seen cancer take the lives of her husband, sister and father. She acknowledges that her life could have been consumed by cancer, but she refused to let that happen. Instead of giving in, Atwood committed herself to not only surviving her own illness but also to help the nearly 1.6 million Americans diagnosed with cancer each year.

“My cancer experience has been a great teacher,” she said. “It’s taught me about the critical need cancer patients have for accurate, reliable information so they can make smart, informed decisions about their care.”

Free Comprehensive Treatment and Facilities Guide
Patient Resource Cancer Guide (www.PatientResource.com) is a comprehensive treatment and facilities guide distributed free of charge to newly diagnosed and newly restaged cancer patients in more than 7,000 medical facilities across the U.S. Now in its sixth year, the guide includes cancer treatment facilities by geographic location as well as detailed sections about cancer types, supportive care, and patient resources such as financial aid, the importance of clinical trials, and seeking second medical opinions—a now common best practice trend that Richard A. Bloch himself pioneered.

“I appreciate the recognition from the Bloch Foundation in earning this prestigious award,” Atwood added. “And I’m proud to accept it on behalf of the nearly 12 million cancer survivors in America today.”

Patient Resource LLC

Linette Atwood is a publisher with more than 25 years of leadership experience in medical publishing. In the early 1980s, she co-founded Atwood Publishing which set the standard in delivering news and information at major medical meetings throughout the United States. Atwood Publishing grew to be the largest company in its field.

In the mid-1990s, Linette co-founded and was the Chief Executive Officer of Exhibitor Visibility Worldwide (EVW). Both companies led the way in publishing the latest advancements in treatment and care during national meetings for such prestigious medical organizations as the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Academy of Pediatrics, to name a few. The primary audience for both Atwood Publishing and EVW was doctors and other medical professionals.

Patient Resource LLC continues the important theme of medical information and education but with a new audience: the patient. As a cancer survivor, Linette has a unique perspective on the many challenges faced by both patients and families when confronting a life-altering disease. The goal is to set a new standard in medical publishing by equipping patients with comprehensive and disease-specific resources designed to empower and heal.
