Make a change this Halloween – for the Health of it!
By Lucy DelSarto, Wellness Educator & Coach –
Did you know, approximately 598 million pounds or $1.9 billion worth of candy is sold during the Halloween season?
What if we “tweaked the treat” and returned to a simpler way of celebrating? What if families and communities came together and became active and more involved with each other? What if we reached out to show gratitude and appreciation to our U.S. troops who protect and serve us?
Be the change you want to see in this world. Gandhi’s words are a source of inspiration. I decided to do my part by creating an event that is fun and fundamental to health and well-being for all ages. “Tweak the Treat” was created in 2009 as a way to create community togetherness and rekindle that fun atmosphere while bringing healthy lifestyle choices to mind.
5th Annual Tweak the Treat
I’m thrilled to announce the 5th Annual TCOY Wellness “Tweak the Treat” event will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2013. This event has become a tradition for many families and I encourage you to participate.
It’s important to realize that over 90% of our habits are formed by the age of eighteen. This family event focuses on teaching children a few life lessons such as moderation, gratitude and being physically active.
Often wellness is only thought of as diet or exercise. My belief and coaching centers around total well-being; head, heart and body. Your thoughts, heart, actions and attitude are the key ingredients to your health. Good or bad, your health is largely a result of your focus and actions. Address all three in a positive way through the “Tweak the Treat” event.
Head – Think moderation. Reduce the intake; get the treats out of the house.
Heart – Imagine our troops opening up care packages with cards and treats.
Body – Get active and have some fun with friends with activity coupons/passes.
Great Life Lessons for Children
Last year, the parents of a returning event participant shared that while they were trick or treating with their daughter, she stopped, opened her Halloween sack of goodies and said, “Look at all the treats I’m getting for the soldiers mommy!” Priceless. Life lesson learned.
Children and adults bring in excessive Halloween candy and treats to fill the care packages for the soldiers. Boxes of Girl Scout cookies have also been donated, which is a real treat for the soldiers and always appreciated.
Participants are offered activity coupons including: Karate lesson; Health Club Guest Passes; Gymnastics; Racquetball; something for all ages to have fun and get physically active.
Lives are Touched!
Many lives are touched, including children and adults as far away as Afghanistan. The video of the “2009 Tweak the Treat” captures the emotion of the event and shows the “pay it forward” pictures of our troops receiving and sharing treats from the care packages with Afghani children. The love and appreciation is undeniable. You can view the 2009 Tweak the Treat video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmSozBfhOFw as well as videos from the 2010, 2011 and 2012 events.
Making a difference in the lives of others is part of wellness. As Mother Teresa stated; “We cannot do great things on this earth, only small things with great love.”
Tweak the Treat Event Honors U.S. Troops
Local photographer, Diana Foster, of The Studio 56, provides beautiful note cards for handwritten notes of appreciation and encouragement for our troops. These cards are placed inside the care packages with the candy and sent overseas to our U.S. Troops, arriving just in time for Thanksgiving.
Sponsors include: TCOY Wellness; Klein Orthodontics; New You Health Studio; Tiger Rock Karate; KC Whole Nutrition; Quivira Crossing Veterinary Clinic; Prairie Life Fitness; 360 Gym; Grapes and Paints; The Studio 56; Katey-did.com Face painting; Monkey Bizness; Little Monkey Bizness; Dr. Michael Flanery, DC; Rosco Halsey – Edward Jones; Team Mannatech; Rise Above; and more.
Action is Required
As a Wellness Coach, I believe the best way to lead is by example. Actions speak louder than words, especially with children.
TCOY Wellness (Take Care of You) mantra: “If you don’t take care of your body, where will you live?” Don’t become a prisoner in your own body due to poor choices in diet, exercise, attitude and habits. Call 913-709-6059 to get started with an introductory consultation today.
